About this site

Waterfront Notes is an independent site about Wellington’s waterfront and harbour architecture: the wharves, the buildings on and beside them, the weather they face, and the practical business of looking after homes and buildings in marine air.

No connection to Clyde Quay Wharf. This site has no connection with the developer, the architects, the main contractor, the body corporate or the residents of Clyde Quay Wharf, and does not speak for any of them. Where we mention them, it is as a matter of public record. We do not sell, lease, value or market apartments or commercial space, and nothing here should be read as information about the current state, management or availability of any property.

Why the name on the address bar. This domain once hosted the marketing website for the Clyde Quay Wharf redevelopment. That site is long gone. The domain now carries new, independently written pages on the same broad subject: the wharf’s history, harbour-edge design, the neighbourhood around it and the realities of living and building beside the sea. Some page addresses from the old site have been kept so that old links still lead somewhere useful, but the writing behind them is new.

How we write. We check facts against public sources, such as council archives, heritage reports and government guidance, and link to them where we can. When we get something wrong, we correct it. The site editors write in the first person plural and do not publish personal bylines.

Where to find official information. For the history of the wharf, the Wellington City Council archives hold records of the Overseas Passenger Terminal building, and Greater Wellington’s heritage addendum report sets out its construction phases. For questions about owning or managing an apartment in a unit title building, unittitles.govt.nz is the place to start.

The contact page explains what we can and cannot help with.
